2007
Congo Mission Trip to the DRC
25
PEVA Delegates went on the 2007 Congo Mission Trip
Twenty-five
PEVA delegates and two delegates from the James Presbytery went to the Congo July
11 - July 25th. The 2007 Congo Mission Trip to the DRC was
a great success. This mission trip was a hands on trip.
Some delegates helped to build the GA/CPK office and building
that needed repair. There were several groups, we worked together with
our brothers and sisters on different projects. and visited with with many
CPK churches. The purpose of the trip was to continue to strengthen the
partnership and some key issues that were focused on: Youth, Women,
Education, Political, Medical & Health Issues, Economical, and Social
Development. God is Good! We never walk alone! Jesus is always
near constantly directing ever protecting guiding all things for His purpose
and our good. Trusting that He will direct your step for His glory and
for your good. Click here to read all about it in the Congo Newsletter
Cyper-Cafe' Project
The
International Partnership Committee (IPC)
& the Presbyterian
Church of Kinshasa (CPK) have
devised a plan to establish a
Cyber-Café in
Kinshasa. As there is no mail
service inside the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congolese
have few ways to communicate
and correspond
other than costly cell phone
connections,
or personal
contacts. Our Presbyterian community of believers is about prayer,
communication, and fellowship, which can be made possible only through regular
e-mail exchange.
Once the Cyber-Café is functioning you will be able to participate with your CPK-sister on a daily basis. Our friends in the Congo need to hear from us and receive our encouragement. Personal communication is appreciated foremost even above monetary assistance for their many obvious needs. A message from us sends hope, inspiration and love through which they acquire emotional nourishment.
Computers, equipment, satellite dish and a wireless Internet connection will be needed in order to make this project possible. CPK will charge churches, members and the community for email and other services. These fees will generate income to make the Cyber-Cafe financially self-sustaining. Our Williamsburg Presbyterian Church has given $1,100 towards the required amount of$8,000 for this project, and is initiating a challenge for our PEVA sister churches to walk and work together toward our goal.
Unite with us to empower our brothers and sisters in the Congo through this significant change in their daily lives. Please prayerfully consider joining your presbytery by giving a donation towards this worthwhile mission
Medical Dr. Wilkinson and Dr. Matson conducted a mid-year review of the malaria treatment evaluation. Over 1090 mothers have been enrolled into the treatment regimen and over 400 deliveries have occurred. Dr. Wilkinson reviewed blinded sets of smears at the two sites that read them and concluded that the technicians are skilled and accurate in performance of this assay. To date, 31% of the mothers have been positive for malaria parasite in the blood at the first prenatal visit, 13% of the mothers have been positive at delivery, and 2.2% of the newborns have been positive. A striking seasonal difference in blood smear positivity has been observed, namely, more than 60% of the mothers have been positive at the first prenatal visit at the end of the dry season (September), whereas only 7% were positive well into the wet season (first two weeks of February). With results like these, the evaluation will need to be conducted for at least one calendar year, through the end of July2008.
BILL S.2125 HAS PASSED IT IS NOW LAW! S. 2125: Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act of 2006 Last Action: Became Public Law No: 109-456. This bill establishes 14 core principles of U.S. policy across a range of issues; authorizes a 25 percent increase in U.S. assistance for the Democratic Republic of the Congo; calls for a Special Envoy to resolve the situation in Eastern Congo; and urges the Administration to use its voice and vote at the United Nations Security Council to strengthen the U.N. peacekeeping force that is providing security in parts of the Congo.
Please write the U.S. House of Representatives, Senators
and Legislators, to thank them for supporting the Congolese people with the bill S.2125 introduced by U.S. Senators Obama,
Burbin, Brownback and Dewine.
Feed the Children Because of the consequences of the continuing rebel fighting, the absence of infrastructure in the government, and natural disasters many Congolese children are starving. Some are orphans who are living on the street; others are from impoverished families unable to feed them. We cannot save them all, but perhaps we can save some of them such as two year old Pauline Kaseka, six year old Kalala Daniel, seven year old Rose Ndombe, and seven year old Muepu Tshisumpa. The cost of feeding one of these children one nutritious meal each day is $20.00 a month.
These
are but four of thousands of starving children in the Congo. These and
others come to one of the eight centers of CPK that provide
meals. In April 2001, we had women from CPK who visited PEVA.
PEVA churches are paired with CPK churches. The Presbyterian Women of
PEVA has a sister relationship with the Presbyterian Women of CPK. Click for more
