Congo Feed the Children
Program
For more information
contact Barbara Newman or
Jessica Fitzgerald.
With funds obtained from
the Thank Offering of Presbyterian Women in July of 2001, the PW Feed the
Children Program was established in the Congo Presbyterian Church Kinshasa
(CPK) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the grant proposal,
items listed as need to establish the program included such basic things
as large saucepans, soup bowls, spoons, chairs, and tables. Funds were
also requested for training of women to administer the program and for
caretakers to implement the program away from the centers. Needs listed as
necessary to feed 100 children for one year included 100 bags of maize @$
3000, 25 bags of soy @ $500, 50 bags of peanuts at $ 625, 30 bags of beans
@ $ 1,000, 20 bags of sugar @ 600, 50 bags of milk @ $ 1,250, Fish @
$1,000 and wheat for making bread at $ 500.
The administrator of the
program which is now operating in four feeding centers has sent us an
accounting of the use of the funds which in addition to the items listed
above include 100 pounds of grasshoppers which we are told are a great
cheap source of protein. With funds which are being contributed on a
regular basis by many of the PW organizations in the 64 churches of PEVA
and especially from individual women in PEVA who have a keen interest in
seeing that starving children in CPK receive one good nutritious meal each
day, the program is thriving.
The number of children who
can be served is dependent on the contributions that continue to be sent
for support of this program. The program is the major global mission of
Presbyterian Women in PEVA.
For a contribution of $20,
one starving child can be feed one meal a day for a period of one month.
For $ 240 that same child can be feed for an entire year. We ask that all
of you who receive this letter, pray for the continued success of this
vital feeding program and consider supporting it with a contribution. If
the Spirit leads you to support this program, please send your
contribution. The funds are electronically transferred
to the Treasurer of CPK, who disburses the funds as needed.
