BIRTHDAY OFFERING 2006 This is the 86th year of the Birthday Offering. Begun in 1922, this offering recognizes Presbyterian Women’s heritage of mission giving. The five causes are detailed in the January/February 2006 issue of Horizons. They are:
Forman Christian College Women's Hostel Loahore, Pakistan - A grant from PW will provide more than just a roof over the heads if these women. By providing on-campus housing, the college will demonstrate its commitment to educating women. The hostel will improve the students quality of life, provide a constructive learning environment and create a setting in which Christian and Muslim women can build relationships and even pursue religious reconciliation.
Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Inc. Refugee Family Center Louisville, Kentucky - With a birthday offering grant, Kentucky Refugee Ministries will provide a Refugee Family Center to help relieve this problem. This center will offer on-site child care, allowing mothers to attend classes, receive case management services and search for the begin employment. Additionally, the center will provide training and support to women who want to become home child care providers. Through education in the areas of literacy, job readiness, women's health, nutrition and mental health, these women will be better equipped to contribute to their families financial and emotional well-being.
The River Johnson City, Tennessee - A grant from the Birthday Offering will allow the river to continue its ministry to women who find themselves in need due to disability, under education , abuse, addiction, prostitution or their role as a single parent. Offering a safe haven and services such as washer, showers a daily prayer and Bible study group, telephones, a writing center, a resource library, counseling and classes, The River is often the only place these woman can go to find someone who cares for them.
ROSE Advocates Maple Tree House Weiser, Idaho - With help form the Birthday offering, ROSE Advocates will expand its mission to provide long-term support and services so that families who are victims of abuse can live safe and successful lives free from abuse. By helping stop the cycle of abuses in these families, PW can help prevent this tragedy from continuing from one generation to the next.
Single Parent Resource Center Inc. Resource Central New York, New York - With help of the Birthday Offering Single parents in underserved neighbors of New York City will find an increased capacity to connect with resources and services designed to address their family's needs. In the long term, they will gather information and establish relationships with additional service providers in their home communities that will be helpful as new family needs emerge. With the support of Presbyterian Women, over the next three years more than 2,00 single parents with low incomes will gain access to an integrated support network created to help meet their specific needs and strengthen their families. If you have a worthy cause, contact your PWP Moderator for information on applying for funding from the Birthday Offering and/or the Thank Offering. Projects requiring funding in excess of $100,000 are considered for the Birthday Offering. Smaller amounts are granted from the Thank Offering. |
